FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Randolph-Macon volleyball fell to Mary Washington 3-0 in Fredericksburg on Saturday night in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Yellow Jackets finished the season with a 24-8 record, winning the regular season and ODAC Tournament Titles. UMW (30-3) advances to the round of 16 with the win.
Senior Rachel Wyatt (Virginia Beach, Va./ Princess Anne) finishes her career at Randolph-Macon as she had an outstanding season and four year career. Wyatt was a part of 94 wins in her time at R-MC and was part of the team that reached the NCAA Elite 8 in 2015.
Mary Washington took the first set by a score of 25-15. Mary Washington were able to block the outside hitters of R-MC effectively. Junior Rebecca McGilvery (Warrenton, Va./ Kettle Run) led the team in the first set with four kills.
UMW would go on to take the second set by a score of 25-14.
With the Yellow Jackets facing elimination from the NCAA Tournament, R-MC put together a much improved third set performance. UMW led 9-4, but the Yellow Jackets would win six of the next seven points to fight back into the set. R-MC then fought off two match points at 24-23 and 28-27, before falling to the Eagles 30-28.
R-MC improved its hitting percentage to .250 in the third set.
The Yellow Jackets finished the last point with four freshman on the court, showing positive signs for the future. Freshman setter Emily Steffan (Salem, Va./ Salem) was huge in the third set and finished the match with four assists and two digs.
Offensively, freshman Miranda Hall (Mechanicsville, Va./ Hanover) continued her form from the ODAC Tournament and as she led the team with seven kills.
Junior Morgan Seal (Midlothian, Va./ Midlothian) returned to the floor for the Yellow Jackets and tallied two kills and one dig.
ODAC Player of the Year and First Team All-Region junior setter, Erin Quinn, finished the season with 1,222 assists. She ranked eighth in the nation in assists per set 10.62 before the match.
