WINCHESTER, Va. - Senior Kasey Martino (Centreville, Va./Centreville) and sophomore Gabby Nelson (Clover, Va./Halifax County) both recorded second-half goals for the Randolph-Macon women's soccer team in a 3-2 ODAC loss at Shenandoah on Wednesday evening.
The Yellow Jackets fell to 9-5-1 overall and 6-3 in the ODAC. The Hornets improved to 9-8 overall and 4-5 in conference play.
SU snapped a scoreless tie with a goal in the 37th minute as the Hornets took a 1-0 lead into intermission.
Martino netted the equalizer early in the second half. Freshman Casey Kent (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) recorded the assist as the score became knotted at 1-1. SU reclaimed the lead in the 64th minute, taking a 2-1 advantage. The Hornets added an insurance goal in the 77th minute to make it 3-1. Nelson scored for R-MC with 10 minutes left on an assist by freshman Meredith Higginbotham (Richmond, Va./Godwin) as the Yellow Jackets pulled within one at 3-2. Nelson had a shot on goal with less than three minutes remaining that was saved by the Hornets, preserving the win for the home team.
R-MC held a 16-14 advantage in shots, while both teams had 10 shots on goal. Nelson paced the Yellow Jackets with seven shots, while she and Martino both registered three shots on goal.
Sophomore Christina Newman (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) had six saves for the Yellow Jackets.
Randolph-Macon concludes the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 28 with a home match against Lynchburg. The start time of the Homecoming contest is 12 noon.
