HARRISONBURG, Va. – Freshman Gabby Nelson (Clover, Va./Halifax County) scored a pair of second-half goals as the Randolph-Macon women's soccer team posted a 2-0 ODAC victory at Eastern Mennonite on Wednesday evening.
The Yellow Jackets (2-4-2, 1-1-0 ODAC) recorded their third shutout of the season.
Following a scoreless first half, Nelson connected on a shot from the right wing that eluded the goalkeeper in the 54th minute to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.
In the 81st minute, Nelson took a through ball from junior Courtney Taylor (Prince George, Va,/Prince George) on a break-away and finished with a goal to push the R-MC lead to 2-0.
The Yellow Jackets had a 24-3 advantage in shots, including 9-2 for shots on goal. Nelson and freshman Kasey Booth (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) both paced R-MC with five shots, while freshman Abbie Winkelmann (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area) added four shots.
Senior Lindsay Zachman (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) and freshman Christina Newman (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) combined on the shutout for the Yellow Jackets. Zachman had one save in the first half, while Newman notched one save in the second stanza.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 8 with a noon ODAC home contest against Sweet Briar.
