Hsieh, Lightfoot Lead R-MC Women’s Lacrosse past SMC 19-15

ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Alicia Hsieh (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) registered a season-high eight goals, one away from her school record, and senior Alex Lightfoot (Fairfax, Va./WT Woodson) added a season-best seven assists, also one away from the program mark that she shares, as the Randolph-Macon women's lacrosse team outscored St. Mary's 19-15 on Thursday evening on Day Field.

The Yellow Jackets (3-4) outscored the Seahawks (4-4) by two goals in each half.

R-MC scored six times in the first eight minutes of the game, with the Jones sisters netting five. Juniors Hannah Jones (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) and Lexi Jones (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) each had two goals, while junior Rachel Jones (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) and junior Saunders Riley (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) added single goals as the Yellow Jackets built a 6-1 lead. SMC tallied two goals before Hsieh had three of the next four goals to give R-MC a 9-4 advantage. The Seahawks scored the final three goals of the half and trailed 9-7 at intermission. Lightfoot had four of her assists in the first period.

The Yellow Jackets started strong in the second half, as Hsieh scored three times and single goals by sophomore Mary Castle (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and freshman Kaylyn Hewes (Linthicum, Md./North County) expanded the R-MC advantage to 14-7 with 18:29 remaining. SMC responded with five straight goals over the next four minutes to make it 14-12. Hannah Jones stopped the run, giving the home team a 15-12 edge with 13:49 left. Another Seahawk goal was answered by Hsieh, making it 16-13 with 11 minutes remaining. SMC again cut it to two before Riley notched her second goal of the game to give the Yellow Jackets a 17-14 lead with five minutes left. The Seahawks scored with 3:05 remaining to again make it a two-goal contest before Hsieh and Lexi Jones both recorded goals in the final 1:30 to make the final score 19-15.

Hanna Jones and Lexi Jones each finished with three goals for the Yellow Jackets.

Hsieh had 223 career goals, the third-highest total in program history. Erin Reidy (1999-02) scored 256 and Alison Smith (1993-96) netted 251. Hsieh is fourth in program history with 257 career points.

Lightfoot has 145 career assists, the second-highest mark for the program. Angela Bisland (1999-02) recorded 163 career assists for the Yellow Jackets.

R-MC held a 20-16 advantage in draw controls. Hewes led all players with eight and Hsieh contributed six.

Senior Sarah Alvanos (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) led the R-MC defense with three ground balls. Junior Abby Roth (Bayville, N.J./Donovan Catholic) had three caused turnovers.

Sophomore Elicia Wells (Richmond, Va./Trinity) recorded nine saves in the first half, while sophomore Katie Thompson (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) registered seven saves in the second stanza.

Randolph-Macon returns to action on Wednesday, March 28 with a 7:30 p.m. contest at Christopher Newport.
