LYNCHBURG, Va. – Sophomore Katie Russo (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) scored the game-winner with two seconds remaining as Randolph-Macon edged Lynchburg 10-9 Wednesday evening in ODAC women's lacrosse action.
The Yellow Jackets (4-3, 1-1) scored seven of the game's first nine goals in taking a 7-2 lead with 10:30 left in the first half. Russo had a goal and two assists in the first period. The Hornets (2-4, 1-2) tallied the next five goals to knot the score at 7-7 at intermission.
Freshman Laney Dee (Norfolk, Va./Bishop Sullivan) scored 2:25 into the second half as R-MC reclaimed the lead. Russo assisted on a goal by sophomore Jenelle Whitman (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) with 19:18 left to give the Yellow Jackets a 9-7 advantage. Lynchburg scored the next two goals, including the tying goal with 1:16 remaining to even the score at 9-9. The Hornets were issued a yellow card with seven seconds left. Russo nailed the man-up goal, assisted by Whitman) with two seconds remaining to give the Yellow Jackets the victory.
Russo finished with two goals and three assists, while Whitman had three goals and two assists. Whitman paced R-MC with five draw controls and three ground balls. Dee and freshman Jessie Cornbrooks (Virginia Beach, Va./Bishop Sullivan) both netted two goals.
Freshman Jamie Langbein allowed one goal and made three saves during her 30 minutes of play.
Randolph-Macon returns to Day Field on Friday, March 21 for a 4 p.m. ODAC contest against Hollins.
