ASHLAND, Va. - Senior Teal Reynolds (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) scored a career-high 17 points, and sophomores Kelly Williams (Garysburg, N.C./Halifax Academy) and Charlotte Woods (Richmond, Va./Trinity) both recorded double-doubles, as the Randolph-Macon women's basketball team posted a 98-79 victory over Bridgewater in ODAC action Tuesday evening in Crenshaw Gym.
The Yellow Jackets improved to 17-4 overall and 10-3 in conference contests. The Eagles dropped to 9-12 overall, 5-8 in league play.
Reynolds tied her career best with 15 points in the first half and reached 17 in the third period. Williams had 27 points and 20 rebounds for her 20th double-double on the season, while Woods had a career-high 20 points with 11 boards for her 10th double-double. Freshman Elise Knobloch (Glenville, Pa./Delone Catholic) registered 10 points for the victors.
R-MC hit three buckets in the lane to take a quick 6-0 lead. The advantage grew to 9-2 before BC buried a pair of three-pointers to cut the deficit to one a 9-8 with seven minutes left in the first period. The Yellow Jackets tallied 11 straight points, four by Williams, to extend the lead to 20-8 with 3:45 remaining. R-MC was up 22-12 before scoring 12 straight over the final three minutes, the last four by Woods, as the Yellow Jackets led 34-12 after one. Williams had 11 first-quarter points, while Woods added eight.
The Eagles started the second period with an 11-5 run to make it 39-23 with 6:30 left. R-MC closed the quarter with an 8-1 spurt, including four by Reynolds, to give the home team a 56-33 lead at intermission. The Yellow Jackets shot 63% from the floor, hitting 22 of 35 field goals. R-MC held advantages of 30-10 on rebounds, 38-12 on points in the paint and 18-2 on second chance points. Williams had 18 points and 12 boards, while Reynolds added 15 points in the first half.
Junior Jayla Wade (Newport News, Va./Heritage) nailed a trey to put R-MC ahead 59-33 before BC put up eight straight points to make it 59-41 with 8:35 remaining in the third period. Following a timeout, the Yellow Jackets used a 14-2 spurt to extend the lead to 30 at 73-43 with 4:35 left. The Eagles closed the period on an 11-6 run as R-MC led 79-54 heading to the final quarter.
Woods had nine of R-MC's first 12 points in the fourth period as the Yellow Jackets held a lead in the 20s before a bucket at the buzzer by BC made the final 98-79.
R-MC had advantages of 56-30 on the boards, 60-32 on points in the paint and 30-15 on second chance points.
Wade paced the Yellow Jackets with seven assists, while Williams added five assists and had five blocks.
Randolph-Macon will play next at Guilford on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 4:30 p.m.
