ROANOKE, Va. – The Randolph-Macon women's basketball team was defeated by Roanoke 77-56. R-MC (3-3, 1-1 ODAC) outrebounded Roanoke (6-3, 1-1 ODAC) 52-48 but were unable to overcome the hot hands of the Maroons. Freshman Kelly Williams (Garysburg, N.C./ Halifax Academy) recorded a career high double double scoring 22 points and grabbing 20 rebounds.
R-MC took a 5-0 lead in the first minute of the game. Sophomore Kelsey Wisner (York, Pa./ Central York) hit two free throws and a three pointer to open the scoring for the night. Wisner, who finished with 15 points, hit two free throws late in the first to give R-MC a 17-15 lead, but Roanoke was able to score four points before the end of the quarter, taking a narrow 19-17 lead.
The Maroons were able to extend their lead to 14 points at halftime as they led 40-26.
In the third quarter R-MC was able to trade buckets for a majority of the period as Roanoke continued to extend its lead. The Maroons shot 47% from the field and 55% from three point range.
Roanoke would go on to win the contest 77-56, outscoring R-MC 19-14 in the fourth quarter.
Williams led all scorers with 22 points, going 8 for 18 from the field and 6 of 10 from the free throw line. Williams now has five double doubles in six games and six straight games of scoring double figures. She was able to make an impact on all aspects of the game, leading the team with four blocks while also adding three steals and an assist.
Sophomore Deja Dennis (Owing Mills, Md./ Western Tech) scored six points and grabbed seven rebounds on the night.
Leading in assists for R-MC was senior Taylor Intermill (Fairfax, Va./ Fairfax), who dished out four and added five points.
For the Maroons, Cary Beahm and Molly Hassell led the team, each with 19 points.
R-MC will be back on the court on December 20 when it travels to Daytona Beach, Florida to play in the Daytona Beach Classic. R-MC will compete against Edgewood and Wheaton.
