Davidson Scores Five, Jones Bats In Four in Pair of No. 4 Softball Wins

Sami Davidson bats

DALEVILLE, Va. – Sophomore Sami Davidson (Stafford, Va. / Brooke Point) scored five runs while senior Harley Jones (Brodnax, Va. / Brunswick) batted home four as the bats came alive for No. 4 Randolph-Macon softball in a pair of wins over Roanoke (22-16, 9-7 ODAC) Saturday afternoon at Lord Botetourt High School in Daleville, Va.  Randolph-Macon (33-3, 12-2 ODAC) had a team batting average of .333 or better in both of the afternoon's contests.

Both starting pitchers were stellar in what has become typical fashion for Randolph-Macon. Junior Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va. / Patrick Henry) got the win and struck out five while walking just one in her complete game of work. Freshman Madie Rhoads (Portsmouth, Va. / Nansemond River) also pitched the complete game, striking out 11 and walking just one as well.

Randolph-Macon will play Guilford tomorrow at 3:00 PM at the R-MC Softball Field.

Randolph-Macon 8, Roanoke 1

Whittemore got the start, going the distance and allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out five. The run scored by RC in the game was unearned. Whittemore won her 14th game of the season and currently sports a 0.68 earned run average this season, second best in the ODAC and coming in to today, was sixth in the nation.

R-MC never really gave the Maroons the chance as the Yellow Jackets got on top early in the game, starting in the third inning.

Junior Kerstin Roth (Yorktown, Va. / Grafton) reached first on an error by the left fielder and advanced all the way to third. Then, Roth came home on a wild pitch, tallying R-MC's first run of the game. After a pair of Yellow Jacket outs, Jones sent a homer over the right field fence, scoring her first RBI of the day. Davidson followed Jones with a single up the middle, which led to a walk issued to sophomore Shelby Hill (Mechanicsville, Va. / St. Margaret's). Junior Sarah Cimring (Chesapeake, Va. / Great Bridge) then stepped in to run for Davidson as junior Brittany LaPrade (Quinton, Va. / New Kent) arrived to bat. LaPrade singled, allowing Cimring to score. R-MC left the inning with a 3-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets did not let up in the fourth inning. Sophomore Maddie Stone (Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) singled to lead off the inning. Again, R-MC got into a two out situation. But an error allowed junior Savannah Wood (Tappahannock, Va. / Essex) onto the base paths and scored Stone. Wood then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jones took advantage, doubling to center field, scoring Wood and tallying her second RBI of the game. Freshman Kamryn Steinruck (Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) came in to run for Jones and came around to score as Davidson sent a double into right field.

Errors were again a problem for Roanoke. In the sixth inning and with a runner on, Jones reached on an error while trying to sacrifice Wood over to third. Wood had singled and then stole second during the previous at bat. Two batters later, Hill singled to left field, scoring Jones.

Roanoke scored in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to an R-MC error, but the damage was too much for the Maroons to attempt a comeback as Randolph-Macon got the 8-1 victory.

R-MC ripped off 11 hits in the game. Hill was 2-3 with an RBI and a walk on the day while Jones was also 2-3 with 2 RBI and two runs scored. LaPrade and Davidson each went 2-4 with an RBI.

Randolph-Macon 11, Roanoke 0

Davidson had a monster game, going 4-5 with four RBIs, a piece of R-MC going 14-39 on the game.

Inside the circle, Rhoads struck out 11 while allowing just one walk, two hits and no runs. Rhoads has the best ERA in the conference, now at 0.57. Coming into the game, her ERA was third-best in the nation as well. She is undefeated this season, now 11-0.

The high-scoring affair began slower with a lone run in the second inning. Davidson singled to begin the inning, with Steinruck running for her after she arrived at first. Hill reached on an error as Steinruck moved to second. After a Yellow Jacket out, the two runners moved up on a wild pitch. The open base was soon occupied as sophomore Taylor Sanderford (Mechanicsville, Va. / Atlee) walked. The next batter, Stone, singled to right field for the RBI as Steinruck came home.

R-MC wouldn't score again until the fifth inning. Roth led the inning off with a single, then stole second. After two quick outs, Jones added another RBI to her day's tally, sending Roth home. Davidson then kept the rally going with a doubled to center field, scoring Jones.

The flood gates really opened in the sixth and seventh innings. With one out, Sanderford singled to left field. Pinch hitter, freshman Lauren Richardson (Stafford, Va. / North Stafford), singled to left field, advancing Sanderford up to second. Junior Casey Abernethy (Prince George, Va. / Prince George) came in to pinch run for Richardson while Cimring came in to run for Sanderford. Roth kept the inning going as she singled to right field and moved the runners up. With the bases loaded, Whittemore reached base on a fielder's choice where all runners were safe, including Cimring at home for the score.

A Roanoke pitching change was not enough to get the outs the Maroons needed to end the inning. Wood singled up the middle, grabbing the RBI as Abernethy scored. With the bases still loaded, Jones walked in Roth and tallied another RBI on her day. The next batter, Davidson, tallied her only non-hit of the day, but still collected an RBI for her effort as she grounded out to second base, scoring Whittemore. The inning finally ended for Roanoke on a lineout, but not before four R-MC runs had crossed the plate.

The seventh inning also led to a four-spot for R-MC. Freshman Megan Smith (Lexington, Va. / Rockbridge County) led the inning off reaching on an error with one out. Freshman Kayley Scott (Henrico, Va. / Lee-Davis) stepped in to pinch hit, singling up the middle and moving Smith along. Freshman Ashley Ramsey (Mechanicsville, Md. / St. Mary's Ryken) also pinch hit and was allowed on as she was hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded, Whittemore singled for an RBI and Smith came home, scoring on an error.

After another R-MC out, sophomore Brooklyne Carr (Windsor, Va. / Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) reached on an error by the shortstop, scoring Scott. R-MC closed out the inning as Davidson score two RBI's as Whittemore and Ramsey came home.

Rhoads tallied a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the inning to secure the shutout.

Roth went 2-4 with two runs scored while Sanderford and Stone went 1-2.
