LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sophomore pitcher Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) and sophomore shortstop Savannah Wood (Tappahannock, Va./Essex) have been named to the 2017 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III All-Atlantic Region Second Team.
Whittemore was also selected to the All-ODAC Second Team and earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team for the NCAA Softball Ashland, Virginia Regional. Whittemore went 23-6 this past season with four saves and an ERA of 1.80. The right-hander led the conference with 22 complete games. Whittemore topped the team and was second in the ODAC with 36 appearances, 26 starts, 23 victories, four saves, 186.2 innings pitched. She was third in the league with 135 strikeouts and fifth with a 1.80 ERA.
Wood was named to the ODAC All-Tournament Team as well as the NCAA Softball Ashland, Virginia Regional. Wood played in 44 games, batting .435 with eight doubles and 22 RBI in her first season with the Yellow Jackets. She was fourth in the ODAC with 30 steals in 31 attempts, fifth in the league with a batting average of .435 and fifth in the conference with a slugging percentage of .493. Wood led the Yellow Jackets with 54 hits, 28 runs, eight doubles and two triples.
Under head coach Kevin Proffitt, Randolph-Macon set a program record with 35 victories in a season. The Yellow Jackets earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and hosted the Ashland, Virginia Regional. R-MC was Regional runner-up for the second time in the past three seasons.
