SALEM, Va. – With #2 R-MC softball down 4-2 to #6 Roanoke, the Yellow Jackets scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to stay undefeated in the ODAC Softball Tournament. Freshman Shelby Hill (Mechanicsville, Va./ St. Margaret's) had the walk off hit to send sophomore Savannah Wood (Tappahannock, Va./ Essex) to home for the fifth run of the game.
R-MC went 2-0 on day one with a win over EMU earlier in the day. R-MC will play #1 nationally ranked Virginia Wesleyan in the winner's bracket at 2 p.m.
In the bottom of the first inning, the Yellow Jackets took a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Kerstin Roth (Yorktown, Va./ Grafton) led off with a single to center field. She then advanced to second and stole third base. Roth then scored on a wild pitch from Roanoke.
Roanoke then responded with a one-run inning in the top of the second. R-MC took the lead again with a one-run third inning. Freshman Kayley Reese (Lake Mary, Fl./ Lake Mary) scored the second run for R-MC, scoring off of sophomore Savanah Wood's (Tappahanock, Va./ Essex) single.
Roanoke then scored one run in the fourth and two in the sixth inning.
With the Jackets down 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh and one out, the comeback began. Sophomore Casey Abernethy (Prince George, Va./ Prince George) was walked, followed by freshman Maddie Stone's (Glen Allen, Va./ Glen Allen) single. Wood then had her second hit of the game to load the bases. Junior Harley Jones (Brunswick, Va./ Brodnax) then reached on a fielder's choice, sending Abernethy to home for the first of three runs.
Stone then scored on a passed ball to even the score at 4-4. Hill then stepped up to the plate and hit a single to right field, sending Wood home for the Yellow Jackets win.
R-MC are now 33-7 on the season and will matchup against the Marlins (41-1).
