SALEM, Va. – The #2 R-MC softball team earned a 3-2 win over #7 Eastern Mennonite in game one of the ODAC Tournament. R-MC scored its three runs in the first and second innings to win the match.
The Yellow Jackets will play game two at 7 p.m. tonight against #6 Roanoke.
R-MC are currently ranked 16th in the nation by the NFCA and fourth in the Atlantic Region by the NCAA.
Sophomore Kerstin Roth (Yorktown, Va./ Grafton) started the game with a single to right field. Roth then stole second and advanced to third off of freshman Maddie Stone's (Glen Allen, Va./ Glen Allen) bunt. Sophomore Savannah Wood (Tappahannock, Va./ Essex) then hit a single to center field, sending Roth to home for the opening run. Wood would then score from Junior Harley Jones' (Brodnax, Va./ Brunswick) rbi.
R-MC then added its third run in the second inning. Freshman Shelby Hill (Mechanicsville, Va./ St. Margaret's) singled through the left side, then stole second and third base. Senior Jen Balcom (Powhatan, Va./ Powhatan) flied out to center field but sent Hill to home.
EMU scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Sophomore Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va./ Patrick Henry) earned her 20th win of the season and threw four strikeouts in the win.
Roth finished with two hits in three at bats with one run scored.
R-MC (32-7) will face off against Roanoke (24-15) at 7 p.m. R-MC played Roanoke on April 22nd, sweeping the double-header with 1-0 and 12-5 wins over the Maroons.
