ASHLAND, Va. - Junior Brandi Mulvena (Farnham, Va./Rappahannock) delivered a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth in the nightcap as the 20th-ranked Randolph-Macon softball team rallied for a doubleheader sweep of Shenandoah on Friday afternoon at the R-MC Softball Field.
The Yellow Jackets (27-7, 10-6 ODAC) took the opener 3-1 before scoring four in the bottom of the seventh and one in the eighth for a 6-5 win in Game 2 over the Hornets (10-26, 5-13 ODAC).
Freshman Cameron Thompson (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) earned victories in both games. She went the distance in Game 1, allowing one unearned run on five hits, four walks and two strikeouts. She pitched the final 3.2 innings in the nightcap with one hits, no runs, one walk and one strikeout.
Senior Jen Balcom (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) was placed on second to start the bottom of the eighth in the nightcap and she moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Casey Abernethy (Prince George, Va./Prince George). Following a walk to freshman Kerstin Roth (Yorktown, Va./Grafton), Mulvena sent a fly ball to left center that was deep enough to plate Balcom with the game-winner.
R-MC trailed 5-1 heading to the bottom of the seventh. Pinch-hitter Taylor Sanderford (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) was hit by a pitch to start the inning and moved to second on a groundout. Roth singled, moving Sanderford to third. Mulvena walked to load the bases and sophomore Savannah Wood (Tappahannock, Va./Essex) was plunked to drive in Sanderford to make it 5-2. Freshman Sami Davidson (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) walked to force in Roth as the Yellow Jackets pulled within two at 5-3. With two away, junior Harley Jones (Brodnax, Va./Brunswick) delivered a two-run single to left to level the score at 5-5.
The Hornets sacrificed their runner to third in the top of the eighth, but Thompson coaxed a pair of flyouts to end the threat.
Jones had two hits and two RBI in Game 2, while Roth went 2 for 4 with two steals and one run.
In the opener, R-MC plated single runs in each of the first three frames. In the first, Roth walked, stole second, moved to third on a flyout and scored when Jones reached on an error.
An inning later, Mulvena drew a one-our walk and came home on a double by Wood to extend the lead to 3-0.
Wood went 2 for 2 with one steal and one RBI to lead the Yellow Jacket offense in Game 1.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Saturday, April 22 with the regular-season finale at home against Roanoke for a 1:30 p.m. ODAC doubleheader.
