Whittemore Goes Distance Twice for #16 R-MC Softball vs. #1 VWC

ASHLAND, Va. - Sophomore Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) threw a pair of complete games as the 16th-ranked Randolph-Macon softball team lost twice to top-ranked Virginia Wesleyan in ODAC action Wednesday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets (20-6, 5-5 ODAC) lost 4-0 in Game 1 and 4-1 in the nightcap.

Whittemore (13-3) allowed six hits and two earned runs in the opener with five walks and one strikeout. She surrendered seven hits and two earned run in Game 2 with seven walks and three strikeouts.

The Marlins (31-1, 12-0) scored twice in the second in Game 1 and added single runs in the fourth and seventh.

R-MC was held to two hits in the opener. Freshman Kerstin Roth (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) and sophomore Savannah Wood (Tappahannock, Va./Essex) had the hits for the Yellow Jackets.

VWC put up two in the top of the first in the nightcap before R-MC responded in the second. Sophomore Diane McDaniel (Fauquier, Va./Liberty) reached on catcher's interference with one away. She moved to second on a groundout and scored on a base hit by freshman Shelby Hill (Mechanicsville, Va./St. Margaret's) to make it a 2-1 game.

The Marlins added two in the seventh.

Wood had two hits in Game 2 and three hits on the day.

Randolph-Macon returns to action on Saturday, April 8 at 1:30 p.m. for an ODAC doubleheader at Lynchburg.
