EMORY, Va. – The #15 R-MC softball team split an ODAC double-header with Emory & Henry on Sunday afternoon. R-MC dropped game one by a score of 1-0 and won 7-6 in eight innings in the second game.
Sophomore Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va./ Patrick Henry) pitched all 15 innings between the two games, throwing a total of eight strikeouts. She earned a win in the second game and is now 13-1 for the season.
After falling game one, the Yellow Jackets put up four runs in the first two innings. In the top of the first, R-MC scored two runs on three hits from sophomore Kerstin Roth (Yorktown, Va./ Grafton), junior Harley Jones (Brodnax, Va./ Brunswick) and sophomore Diane McDaniel (Fauquier, Va./ Liberty).
Then in the second inning, R-MC would score two runs, this time off of four hits. Freshman Shelby Hill (Mechanicsville, Va./ St. Margaret's), freshman Sami Davidson (Stafford, Va./ Brooke Point), Roth and freshman Maddie Stone (Glen Allen, Va./ Glen Allen) all got hits in the inning.
R-MC would score two more runs in the top of the fourth to increase the lead to 6-2. Roth sent Hill to home for the first score and Davidson scored after a Stone bunt.
The Wasps would score three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra innings.
R-MC would waste no time and score the winning run in the top of the eighth inning. Davidson hit a single up the middle to send senior Jen Balcom (Powhatan, Va./ Powhatan) to home for the winning run.
R-MC (20-4, 5-3 ODAC) will be back in action on Wednesday for a home double-header against #3 nationally ranked Virginia Wesleyan.
