Thompson & Whittemore Combine on 2-0 Shutout for R-MC Softball vs. Buffalo State

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Freshman Cameron Thompson (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) tossed six scoreless innings and sophomore Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) earned her second save as the Randolph-Macon softball team blanked Buffalo State 2-0 Saturday afternoon at the Beach Blast at the Princess Anne Athletic Complex.

The Yellow Jackets improved to 10-0 to start the season, while the Bengals fell to 0-4.

Thompson (5-0) allowed three hits with two walks and one strikeout. Whittemore took over with two on and none out in the seventh. She coaxed a double-play ball and a groundout to secure the victory.

R-MC got its first run in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Savannah Wood (Tappahannock, Va./Essex) had a one-out single, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and came home on a base hit by junior Skylar Toth (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, R-MC added an insurance run as freshman Kayley Reese (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary) ripped a pinch-hit homer to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 advantage. It was the first collegiate hit for Reese.

Wood finished with two hits for the Yellow Jackets.

Randolph-Macon returns to action on Saturday, March 11 with a 12 noon doubleheader against Gettysburg.
