VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Sophomore Diane McDaniel (Fauquier, Va./Liberty) drove in three and scored the game-winner in the sixth as the Randolph-Macon softball team edged Case Western Reserve 4-3 Saturday afternoon at the Beach Blast at the Princess Anne Athletic Complex.
The Yellow Jackets (9-0) got on the board in the top of the first. Freshman Kerstin Roth (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) had a leadoff single, stole second and was sacrificed to third by sophomore Savannah Wood (Tappahannock, Va./Essex). Junior Skylar Toth (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) drew a two-out walk and McDaniel drove in both with a triple to give R-MC a 2-0 advantage.
After the Spartans (1-3) cut the deficit in half in the second, the Yellow Jackets responded in the third. Wood drew a leadoff walk, stole second, was sacrificed to third by Toth and scored on a groundout by McDaniel as R-MC led 3-1.
CWRU plated a pair in the fifth to knot the score at 3-3.
In the top of the sixth, McDaniel started the inning by reaching on an error. Freshman Shelby Hill (Mechanicsville, Va./St. Margaret's) sacrificed her to second and McDaniel moved to third on a wild pitch. With two away, junior Brandi Mulvena (Farnham, Va./Rappahannock) singled to drive in McDaniel with the go-ahead run.
R-MC starting pitcher Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) allowed a leadoff single in the bottom of the sixth, but a groundout sandwiched around a pair of popouts ended the frame. Whittemore rolled three groundouts in the bottom of the seventh to secure her fifth victory without a loss. Whittemore did not walk a batter in the game and struck out three.
Randolph-Macon would face Buffalo State in its final Beach Blast contest.
