VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Freshman Sam Scifres (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) had a two-run single to highlight a six-run first as the R-MC softball team defeated Rutgers-Camden 7-3 Friday afternoon in the Beach Blast at the Princess Anne Athletic Complex.
After the Scarlet Raptors (1-1) plated an unearned run in the top of the first, the first six hitters for the Yellow Jackets (7-0) reached base and scored in the bottom of the firame. Sophomore Kerstin Roth (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) drew a leadoff walk and stole second. She moved to third on a bunt single by freshman Shelby Hill (Mechanicsville, Va./St. Margaret's) and scored on a wild pitch to level the score at 1-1. Junior Harley Jones (Brodnax Va./Brunswick) was intentionally walked and junior Skylar Toth (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) reached when her sacrifice fly to left was dropped, driving in Hill with the go-ahead run. Sophomore Savannah Wood (Tappahannock, Va./Essex) singled to bring home Jones to make it 3-1. Wood stole second and she scored behind Toth on a single to center by Scifres to raise the score to 5-1. Scifres would touch home on a groundout by freshman Sami Davidson (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) as R-MC took a 6-1 advantage.
Rutgers-Camden would add two runs in the third before the Yellow Jackets tallied an insurance run in the sixth as Roth reached on an error, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and came home on a sacrifice fly by Hall to make the final 7-3.
Freshman Cameron Thompson (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) went the distance to raise her record to 4-0. She allowed five hits and two earned runs with three walks and one strikeout.
