Yellow Jackets Picked Second in ODAC Preseason Poll

FOREST, Va. – The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) released the 2017 softball preseason poll, voted on by the ODAC coaches. Randolph-Macon were voted to second place in the poll with 82 points and also received one first place vote.

In 2016, R-MC finished the season with a 31-13 overall record and a 12-6 ODAC record. The Yellow Jackets finished the regular season in third place behind Va. Wesleyan and EMU.

Voted in first place was Virginia Wesleyan, who won the 2016 ODAC Championship over Eastern Mennonite. Also tied for second place with R-MC is Lynchburg. Rounding out the top six was voted, Eastern Mennonite, Guilford and Roanoke.

Returning for the Yellow Jackets in 2017 will be a roster of 22 student-athletes, led by the lone senior Jen Balcom (Powhatan, Va./ Powhatan). Also returning will be standout Harley Jones (Brodnax, Va./ Brunswick) who finished second on the team in batting average (.344), hits (45) and home runs (7). Another returner will be sophomore pitcher Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va./ Patrick Henry) who finished with 136 strikes and a 1.81 ERA in 19 games started.

Head coach Kevin Proffitt and assistant coach Amanda Sopko have brought in a recruiting class of 11 underclassman who will join the roster this season.

The Yellow Jackets received votes in the NFCA preseason poll. R-MC opens the season on February 25 with a home double header against Frostburg State. R-MC will begin ODAC play on March 26th with a home game against Randolph.
