Sarver, Pratson and Berry Defeat Shoremen on Sunday

ASHLAND, Va. – Sophomores Grant Sarver (Richmond, Va. / Mills Godwin) and Luke Pratson (Leonardtown, Md. / St. Mary's Ryken) and junior Shane Berry (Midlothian, Va. / James River) defeated their Shoremen opponents on Sunday afternoon, but it was not enough as Washington College secured victory 7-2 in non-conference action at the Banks Tennis Center.

Washington College (3-5) notched its first win as the first-finishing doubles pair, #2 singles' Chris Salisbury and Kyle Hickey, defeated the #2 duo of junior Jacob Haines (Springfield, Va. / West Sprinfield) and Berry 4-8. Randolph-Macon made a comeback though, with #3 pair, Sarver and Pratson, as they defeated the WC #3 duo of Koby Bonta and Andrew Smith 8-5. It marked Pratson's first career collegiate win.

The doubles competition came down to #1 pair, senior Baxter Carter (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's School) and freshman Alex Hein ( Windermere, Fla. / Windermere Preparatory School), who took their opponents to a tiebreak set. The duo weren't able to overcome the Shoremen's #1 team though, dropping the tie-break 7-2 and losing their set 9-8 overall.

In the singles competition, Berry secured R-MC's only singles victory of the afternoon, winning against Hickey 6-1, 7-5. Berry now owns a 7-1 record this season.

But the Shoremen were able to get victories up and down the rest of the singles lineup.

#1 Singles competitor Sarver was defeated by Salisbury 4-6, 4-6. Singles #2 Hein worked to force a win by two for Luke Weaver in the first set, but eventually lost 5-7, 3-6.

In #3 Singles, Carter was defeated by Bonta 2-6, 2-6 and #5 Singles competitor, freshman Dani Recarte ( Madrid, Spain / Wakefield School), lost 1-6, 4-6. Sophomore Brycen Boettcher (Keysville, Va. / Randolph Henry) faced WC's Justin Panepinto, but was also defeated 1-6, 1-2.

Randolph-Macon (5-3, 1-2 ODAC) will face Southern Virginia at home on Tuesday at 4:00 PM. The match with Guilford that had previously been postponed has also been rescheduled for Friday at 4:00 PM. The team will also host a tennis fundraiser on Saturday, April 7 at 10:00 AM. For more information, contact head coach Charles Gray at cgray@rmc.edu.
