Men’s Soccer Clicks On All Cylinders, Beats Wasps 3-0

Peter Nelson Approaches soccer ball

EMORY, Va. – All elements of Randolph-Macon's game – from defense to offense to bench play – were on display in a Saturday afternoon match with Emory & Henry as the Yellow Jackets defeated the Wasps 3-0.

R-MC had five shots in the opening frame with three coming on goal. The Yellow Jackets defense held the Wasps to just two shots in half one, with just one shot coming on goal. That attempt was saved by R-MC's junior goalkeeper, Brian Breslin (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson). Senior Jacob McHugh (Aberdeen, Md. / West Nottingham Academy) and sophomore Andrew Griggs (Galloway, N.J. / Absegami) were Randolph-Macon's first half shot leaders with two each, with one coming on goal for both as well. Both added a shot in the second half as well, finishing with three apiece.

The two were also a part of the only goal of the first half. Randolph-Macon got the score in the 31st minute as McHugh put the ball toward the back post off a corner kick by Griggs. It was Griggs' third assist and McHugh's second goal of the season.

Senior Peter Nelson (Charleston, WV / George Washington) and sophomore Christian Torres (Stafford, Va. / C.D. Hylton) each took a shot in the first half as well.

R-MC again went deep in bench play for half one. Five R-MC players came off the bench to spell starters, helping the Yellow Jackets stay fresh and get a leg up.

The Yellow Jackets also showed extreme discipline in half one, drawing just two fouls compared to the Wasps' eight.

Randolph-Macon turned the offense back on in the second half, doubling its shot total from half one, taking 12 in the frame to total 18 in the match.

Nelson jumped out as a second half leader taking two more shots, both on goal. One of those shots got through for a score. In the 63rd minute, freshman Ruben Niamien (Fredericksburg, Va. / Chancellor) crossed from the right side allowing Nelson to finish the goal to the back post. Niamien got the assist, his first of the season, while Nelson scored his first goal of the season.

Nelson was also involved in the second goal of the half. Moments after a free kick in the 83rd minute, freshman AJ Casarez (Virginia Beach, Va. / Landstown) deflected a ball into the goal for a score. Nelson was credited with the assist for the goal, tallying his first of 2017. The goal was Casarez's first as well.

Defensively, R-MC did not allow a single Emory & Henry corner kick in the match, while the Yellow Jackets took five total.

Breslin saved another shot on goal in the second half. E&H took four shots in the second half to total six for the match.

In addition to the three shots from Nelson, Griggs and McHugh, R-MC also got a three-shot day from Torres, with two of his tries falling on goal.  Senior Brian Lutz (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson), junior Brad Robertson (Mechanicsville, Va. / Atlee) and sophomores Paul Duffy (Salem, Va. / Salem) and Enrique Dubon (Woodbridge, Va. / C.D. Hylton) as well as Niamien all took one shot for R-MC, with Dubon and Niamien's shots being on goal.

Randolph-Macon is now 10-1 overall and 3-1 in the ODAC. They continue conference play by hosting Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday at 4:00 PM at the R-MC Soccer Field.
