ASHLAND, Va. – A pair of Yellow Jackets combined for goals while R-MC's defense saved six shots in a 2-0 victory over conference rival Randolph College on Saturday afternoon. R-MC moves to 8-1 on the season and 1-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC).
Randolph-Macon opened the scoring in the 25th minute when sophomore Anthony Astruc (Glen Allen, Va./Benedictine) bent a free kick in from the top of the box to go up 1-0. It was Astruc's third goal of the season. The shot was one of five for R-MC in the half and the only one on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Brian Breslin (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) saved all three shots on goal he faced in the opening frame. The Wildcats took four shots total in the half.
R-MC extended its lead in the 63rd minute during the second half when sophomore Andrew Griggs (Galloway, N.J. / Absegami) took a cross from Astruc into the box, scoring on a shot from the left of the box and past the keeper into the back of the net. It was Astruc's third assist and Griggs' third goal of 2017.
Randolph-Macon took seven shots total in the second half with only one other one falling on goal, which was saved. Randolph tried four shots against the Yellow Jackets' defense, with three being saved by Breslin, who made a few tremendous diving saves against the powerful Wildcats offense.
The game marked R-MC's second overall victory vs Randolph College since they began competing in men's sports. The only other win was in 2011 when the Yellow Jackets won 3-2.
R-MC now goes on the road for a pair of games. They will play at Hampden-Sydney on Wednesday, October 4 at 7:00 PM and at Emory & Henry on Saturday, October 7 at 3:00 PM. They return home against Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday, October 10 at 4:00 PM.
