ARLINGTON, Va. - Senior Bryan Lutz (Fairfax, Va./WT Woodson) tallied a pair of goals in the second half as the Randolph-Macon men's soccer team was victorious 2-0 at Marymount on Wednesday evening for its third straight shutout win.
The Yellow Jackets improved to 3-0, having outscored their opponents 8-0. It is the best program start since 2005, when R-MC won its first eight matches. The Saints fell to 0-2.
R-MC started slowly in the first half before subs off the bench gave the visitors momentum. Sophomore Josh Beeker (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) made the biggest difference, coming in at defensive center midfield 15 minutes into the match and stayed in the rest of the way. The game was scoreless at intermission.
Lutz netted his first goal in the 47th minute on an assist by sophomore Paul Duffy (Salem, Va./Salem) to give R-MC a 1-0 lead. Lutz scored his second goal in the 89th minute, assisted by senior Jacob McHugh (Aberdeen, Md./West Nottingham Academy) to make the final 2-0.
Lutz now leads the Yellow Jackets with three goals and six points on the season.
R-MC held a 19-7 advantage in shots. Lutz paced the victors with five shots, including three on goal.
Junior Brian Breslin (Fairfax, Va./WT Woodson) had six saves for the Yellow Jackets, including four in the second half.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 3 pm. at Cabrini.
