Men’s Lacrosse Uses Big Second Quarter To Beat Goucher 12-5

TOWSON, Md. – Randolph-Macon scored three goals in the second quarter while shutting out Goucher in the same period en route to a 12-5 victory in Towson Saturday afternoon. Senior Miles Muncie (Midlothian, VA / Midlothian) had six goals on the afternoon, including the first of the second quarter.

Junior Colin DiSesa (Ashland, Va. / Hanover) opened the afternoon with a goal for Randolph-Macon with 6:31 remaining in the first quarter on an unassisted play. Goucher responded with 1:28 to go in the quarter and the two teams hit the second quarter with a 1-1 tie.

But R-MC found the sweet spot in the period as Muncie opened the quarter up with a goal at 13:52, giving R-MC a lead it did not relinquish for the rest of the game. Muncie's goal came with a man-up advantage and was assisted by senior Coleman Adams (Mechanicsville, VA / St. Christopher's). Senior Alex Camilliere (Huntingtown, MD / Huntingtown) scored about four minutes later with 10:20 remaining. Then, with 3:32 to go, senior Kyle Keepers (Roswell, GA / Roswell) sent a DiSesa pass into the net for the score to five R-MC the 4-1 lead. The Yellow Jackets did not allow a Goucher goal in the second quarter. 

With the momentum behind them, R-MC continued to score in the second half. Muncie shot a pass from keepers in the net for a goal just two minutes into the third quarter. Goucher got one goal back in a man-up situation with 8:09 to go. But R-MC scored twice in just 40 seconds as Muncie score unassisted with 4:20 to go and DiSesa put his second of the day into the net on a pass from junior Cole Churchill (Hillsborough, NC / Cedar Ridge). Goucher added one more at the end of the period in another advantage situation, but the Yellow Jackets still took the lead into the final period of play 7-3.

Muncie opened the fourth quarter like he did the third – with a score at 12:39, giving R-MC the five goal advantage. R-MC – and specifically Muncie – dominated the final period of play as he  scored twice more in the period alone – once on a DiSesa pass with 9:42 to go and then again with :38 remaining after a pass from senior Tyee Buttrey (Damascus, MD / Damascus). Sophomore Ryan Tiffey (Colombia, Md. / Wilde Lake) scored with 11:43 to go in the period and Keepers added another R-MC goal with 6:06 remaining after a pass from DiSesa, the third assist for DiSesa on the afternoon.

Junior Chris Cerrina (Ridgewood, NJ / Ridgewood) made seven saves while working in goal. Senior Andrew Venezia and Churchill each made a pair of caused turnovers to add to the R-MC defensive effort while sophomore Tyler Flora (Mechanicsville, Va. / Hanover) picked up fiver ground balls and sophomore Joe Maranto (Joppa, Md. / Fallston) picked up four. R-MC held the overall ground ball advantage 30-21.  Maranto was also 5-6 on faceoffs for the day, which were split for both teams at ten apiece.

Randolph-Macon will next face Haverford College in Baltimore at The Gilman School at 1:30 PM next Saturday.
