ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph-Macon men's lacrosse team were edged 5-4 by Haverford College on Saturday afternoon. Junior Kyle Keepers (Roswell, Ga./ Roswell) scored two goals for the Yellow Jackets.
Both sides created good opportunities but were unable to capitalize, as the teams finished the first period scoreless.
Haverford scored the first goal of the contest in the second period. R-MC would then score two goals from Keepers and sophomore Andrew Hogg (Charlottesville, Va./ Albemarle) to take the lead at 2-1. The Fords then leveled the score at 2-2, but Randolph-Macon was able to take a 3-2 lead into halftime with a goal from senior Sam Mayer (Severna Park, Md./ Severna Park).
Haverford would score the only goal in the third period to even the score. The teams went into the final quarter with the score tied at 3-3. R-MC fought back from behind twice in the quarter as sophomore Lee Pratt (Winston-Salem, N.C./ Ronald Reagan) and Keepers both scored.
The Fords scored the winning goal in the game with just six seconds on the clock to improve to 2-1. R-MC falls to 2-3 for the season.
Freshman Joe Maranto (Joppa, Md./ Fallston) again dominated the face offs for the Yellow Jackets, winning 9 of 14. He picked up a team best five ground balls.
Senior goalie Brian Davies (Lynchburg, Va./ E.C. Glass) had five saves and two ground balls in the game.
Offensively, four Yellow Jackets finished with two points. Keepers had two goals, Pratt and Hogg had a goal and an assist and Mayer had two assists in the game.
Junior defender Andrew Venezia (Rockville, Md./ Good Counsel) led the defense with two caused turnovers.
R-MC will be back in action on Wednesday, March 8 for a home match against St. Mary's at 7 p.m.
