FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The R-MC men's lacrosse team fell 13-12 in the opening game of the season to Mary Washington on Wednesday afternoon. Junior Miles Muncie (Midlothian, Va./ Midlothian) scored four goals and picked up eight ground balls for the Yellow Jackets in the season opener.
Muncie scored the first goal for the Yellow Jackets in 2017 as he leveled the score at 1-1. R-MC and UMW finished the first quarter tied at 2-2.
R-MC then outscored the hosts 5-4 in the second period. Muncie and junior Kyle Keepers (Roswell, Ga./ Roswell) each scored two goals, while senior Sam Mayer (Severna Park, Md./ Severna Park) scored and assisted one. Mayer finished the game with two goals and two assists.
At the half the Yellow Jackets led 7-6 over the Eagles.
UMW would outscore R-MC 3-1 in the third period. Muncie scored his fourth goal in the third quarter.
In the fourth and final period, UMW would go on a 3-0 run to make the score 12-9 with just under nine minutes remaining. R-MC would then score three of the next four goals as Mayer scored once, while freshman Colin Disesa (Ashland, Va./ Hanover) scored two goals in his first appearance for the Yellow Jackets.
Keepers would finish the game with four points, scoring three goals and dishing out an assist.
Goalie Brian Davies (Lynchburg, Va./ E.C. Glass) made 12 saves to keep the Yellow Jackets in the game. He also picked up six ground balls.
Defensively, junior Kyle Geblein (Hagerstown, Md./ Smithburg) led the team with three caused turnovers and also picked up eight ground balls.
R-MC will play its home opener on Saturday with a game against Catholic at 1:00 p.m. on Day Field.
