Noe Jumper Lifts R-MC Men's Basketball over UMW

ASHLAND, Va. - Junior Daniel Noe (Fairfax, Va./Bishop Ireton) nailed a 15-foot jumper with 13 seconds left to snap a 47-47 deadlock as the Randolph-Macon men's basketball team edged Mary Washington 49-47 Sunday afternoon in Crenshaw Gymnasium.

The Yellow Jackets (4-5) held a 47-44 advantage before Jamal Newton sank a three-pointer from the left corner with 37.5 seconds left as the Eagles (5-4) leveled the score at 47-47. Freshman Korey Turner (Midlothian, Va./Amelia Academy) found Noe for the go-ahead bucket with 13.3 seconds remaining. Johnny Cronin missed a potential tying jumper for UMW with one second left.

R-MC trailed 28-22 at halftime before starting the second period on a 9-2 run to take a 31-30 lead five minutes into the second half. Senior Michael Taylor (Apex, N.C./Grace Christian) hit seven of the nine points for the Yellow Jackets. The Eagles scored seven straight points to go ahead 37-31 with 11 minutes left. A layup by Noe capped a 7-0 spurt as the home team took a 38-38 lead with 8:50 remaining. UMW led 42-40 with five minutes left before a Noe layup tied it at 42 with 3:45 remaining. Turner buried a three-pointer with just over two minutes left to put the home team on top 45-42. After an Eagle layup, Turner sank a jumper with just over one minutes left to give R-MC a 47-44 lead.

Noe had a pair of layups to start the game as R-MC jumped to a 6-2 lead. UMW scored eight straight to take a 10-6 advantage seven minutes into the contest. The Eagles extended the run to 16-2 in pushing their lead to 18-8 with just under seven minutes left in the first half. The Yellow Jackets trailed 26-16 before scoring six of the half's final eight points to trail 28-22 at intermission. Noe had two layups in that final spurt to finish with eight first-half points.

Noe finished the game with 16 points and five rebounds. Taylor had 11 total points, including nine in the second half. Taylor also had three rebounds and two steals. Turner had seven points and paced the Yellow Jackets with six rebounds. Senior Jamie Wilson (West Point, Va./West Point) had three points, five rebounds and four assists.

Randolph-Macon returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 29 in the first round of the R-MC Coaches Tournament, sponsored by Kay Jewelers. The Yellow Jackets face FDU-Florham at 7 p.m. following Johns Hopkins vs. York at 5 p.m. The consolation game is on Friday, Dec. 30 at 5 p.m., followed by the title game at 7 p.m.
