ASHLAND, Va. – Freshman Korey Turner (Midlothian, Va./Amelia Academy) had 12 points, while junior Daniel Noe (Fairfax, Va./Bishop Ireton) and sophomore Grayson Midulla (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) both tallied 11 as the Randolph-Macon men's basketball team dropped a 64-59 to Averett Saturday afternoon in Crenshaw Gym.
The Cougars (2-4) jumped out to a quick 13-6 lead seven minutes into the contest. Freshman Luke Neeley (Orange, Va./Woodberry Forest) hit a three-pointer to cap a 10-4 run as the Yellow Jackets (3-5) cut the deficit to one at 17-16 with seven minutes left in the first half. AU scored seven straight to go up 24-16 with 5:25 remaining before Turner scored five in a 7-0 run for R-MC as the visitors led 24-23 at halftime.
Midulla had a follow-up basket to start the second half as the Yellow Jackets took their first lead at 25-24. Junior Sean Ryan (Plainfield, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) nailed a trey to put R-MC on top 28-24. The Cougars scored eight straight to take a 32-28 advantage. AU led 47-42 with 6:30 remaining before a layup by Turner capped an 8-3 spurt as the Yellow Jackets knotted the score at 50-50. The Cougars scored six of the next eight points to take a 58-52 lead with 1:22 left in their way to the 64-59 victory.
Midulla also had four assists and three rebounds for the Yellow Jackets. Senior Jamie Wilson (West Point, Va.;/West Point) had six rebounds for R-MC.
James Contreras Jr. had 23 points for AU.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 18 at 2 p.m. against Mary Washington.
