ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph-Macon field hockey team defeated Ferrum College 4-2 on Wednesday afternoon. Junior Victoria Cappadora (Manchester, Md./ Manchester Valley) scored two goals in the game, including the winning goal in the second half.
The Yellow Jackets (2-12, 0-5 ODAC) dominated early against the Panthers (3-11, 2-3 SAA). R-MC outshot Ferrum 19-2 in the first period and gathered seven penalty corners. R-MC made the most of a penalty corner just four minutes into the game. Senior Skyler Seligman (Norfolk, Va./ Granby) took the corner from the left side and played it to fellow senior Kali Carroll (Earlysville, Va./ Albemarle) who took the shot just inside the arc and found the back of the goal, giving R-MC a 1-0 lead.
R-MC then doubled its lead in the 16th minute when Cappadora scored off a pass from Haley McMahon (Fredericksburg, Va./ Riverbend).
Ferrum launched a comeback in the early stages of the second half. FC scored twice in the first four minutes to level the score at 2-2.
After the early pressure from the Panthers, R-MC regained control of the game. The Yellow Jackets recorded 14 shots in the second period, six of those on target. Cappadora then scored the deciding goal in the 55th minute with an assist again from McMahon.
The Panthers pushed for a late equalizer but R-MC sealed the game with a goal just under 10 minutes remaining. Freshman Taylor Acevedo (Mullica Hill, N.J./ Kingsway Regional) scored her first goal as a Yellow Jacket after senior Katiee Nicholas (Virginia Beach, Va./ Tallwood) took the original shot.
