GREENSBORO, N.C. - Junior Tre Frederick (Angier, N.C./West Johnston) rushed 30 times for 199 yards and two touchdowns as the Randolph-Macon football team outscored Guilford 38-22 in ODAC action Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets (5-3, 3-2 ODAC) amassed 420 yards of offense on 70 plays, including 308 yards on the ground against the Quakers (4-5, 2-3 ODAC).
On the second possession of the game for Guilford, senior Ryan Burns (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) picked off a pass on the R-MC 20 and returned it to the GC 49. R-MC used nine rushes to reach the end zone, with Frederick scoring from 23 yards out as the Yellow Jackets took a 7-0 lead with 2:02 left in the first quarter.
The Yellow Jackets added to their lead early in the second period. In a 10-play drive, senior JP Redmond (Midlothian, Va./Monacan) ran nine times for 53 yards and scored on a two-yard rush to give the visitors a 14-0 lead with 10:42 left in the second quarter. Following a short punt, sophomore Burke Estes (Wilmington, N.C./New Hanover) hit sophomore Sam Tanner (Richmond, Va./Lee-Davis) on a 53-yard scoring strike to give R-MC a 21-0 advantage midway through the second. After holding the Quakers on their next possession, the Yellow Jackets took over on their own 25. Frederick rushed for seven yards, 58 yards, and 10 yards into the end zone to give R-MC a 28-0 lead with 4:30 left in the quarter. GC tallied a touchdown with 15 seconds left in the half to make it 28-7 at intermission. Frederick had 18 carries for 136 yards and two scores in the first half.
Following a kickoff return by sophomore Jordan Foster (Lynchburg, Va./Liberty Christian) to the R-MC 40 to start the second half, the Yellow Jackets drove 60 yards in 10 plays to add to their lead. Estes hit Hoy on a swing pass that went eight yards for a touchdown, giving R-MC a 35-7 lead with 9:20 left in the third quarter. GC got a touchdown on its first possession of the third period, closing the gap to 35-14 with 5:37 left in the quarter.
Freshman Joel Calkins (Lynchburg, Va./Liberty Christian Academy) batted down a pass in the end zone to stop GC on downs early in the final period. The Yellow Jackets took over on their own 8 with 13:46 remaining. R-MC ate 8:40 off the clock, going 79 yards in 14 plays to the GC 13. Freshman Chris Vidal (Wake, N.C./Wake Forest) nailed a 30-yard field gal to give the Yellow Jackets a 38-14 lead with 5:06 left.
The Quakers scored a TD with 2:58 left to narrow the gap to 38-22. GC recovered the onside kick and moved to the R-MC 22 before the Yellow Jacket defense held on fourth down with 1:07 remaining. R-MC took two knees to secure the victory.
Frederick now has 1,186 rushing yards on the season, the 13th 1,000-yard rushing season in program history and the ninth-highest total in school history.
R-MC held an advantage of 36:14 to 23:46 in time of possession. Estes completed 8 of 12 passes for 112 yards and two scores.
Junior Yonis Blanco (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) led the R-MC defense with eight tackles.
Randolph-Macon will conclude the regular season at home with The Game, the traditional finale with Hampden-Sydney on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 1 p.m. at Day Field.
