EMORY, Va. - The Randolph-Macon offense had 234 rushing yards on 56 carries, but it could not overcome five turnovers in a 27-20 ODAC loss at Emory & Henry Saturday afternoon.
R-MC (5-1, 2-1 ODAC) had four interceptions and one lost fumble.
The Yellow Jackets took an early lead as the defense recorded its first safety of the season. Senior Tom Buchanan (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) grabbed the E&H quarterback in the end zone, who was flagged for intentional grounding, giving R-MC a 2-0 lead with 2:13 left in the opening quarter. On the ensuing possession, an R-MC fumble gave the Wasps (2-4, 1-2 ODAC) the ball on the Yellow Jacket 45. E&H hit a long pass for a touchdown to take a 7-2 lead with 1:06 left in the first period.
The Wasps snagged an interception on the next possession and again found the end zone to take a 14-2 advantage with 12:54 remaining in the second quarter. R-MC was able to respond late in the quarter to trail 14-9 at intermission as sophomore Eric Hoy (Clayton, N.C./Clayton) scored from one yard out with 3:37 left.
E&H found the end zone again midway through the third period as the Wasps extended their lead to 20-9.
Early in the fourth quarter, Buchanan recovered a fumble at the E&H 39. The Yellow Jackets moved to the E&H 16 before senior Seth Yurgel (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland) nailed a 33-yard field goal with 12:41 left to make it a one-score game at 20-12.
The R-MC defense did not allow the Wasps to pick up a first down on their next possession and a punt gave the Yellow Jackets the ball on their 44. R-MC picked up one first down, but a short punt gave E&H the ball on its 35. A 65-yard TD pass gave the home team a 27-12 advantage with 8:26 left.
The Yellow Jackets then put together their best drive of the day, going 77 yards in 11 plays as sophomore Joseph Vairo (Coral Springs, Fla./Westminster Academy) hit sophomore Sean McDonald (Boyce, Va./Clarke County) on a six-yard scoring strike on fourth down. Hoy ran in for the two-point conversion to cut the deficit to seven with 4:17 remaining.
E&H went 3-and-out and R-MC took over at midfield with 3:03 left. The Yellow Jackets moved to the E&H 33, but a pair of incompletions and an interception turned the ball over to the Wasps with 2:09 remaining. E&H picked up one first down and was able to run out the clock.
Sophomore Tre Frederick (Angier, N.C./West Johnston) had 104 rushing yards on 25 carries. Hoy rushed 12 times for 65 yards and had four receptions for 70 yards.
Senior Michael Farry (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) led the R-MC defense with eight tackles, including one tackle for loss. Senior Logan O'Neill (Lorton, Va./South County) had seven stops, 1.5 tackles for loss and combined on a quarterback sack.
Randolph-Macon returns to Ashland for Homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 22, for a 1 p.m. ODAC contest against Catholic at Day Field.
