R-MC Equestrian Kicks off Spring with a Big Win at ODU

NORFOLK, Va. - Wasting no time kicking off their spring season, the R-MC Equestrian Team brought home the win at the ODU IHSA show this Sunday, February 12.  Consistently strong rides from the whole team, from Walk/Trot to Open, gave the Yellow Jackets the lead over the nine teams competing.

In addition, R-MC also brought home the High Point Rider honors as well, with freshman Julia Bain winning the tri-colors. Julia, who also plays lacrosse for R-MC, won both her Novice Flat and Fences classes and then broke the tie for first by correctly answering a technical horsemanship question posed to her by the event’s judge.

“This is a well-deserved win,” said team Director Dana Lesesne.  “These riders worked hard all January, knowing we had a show days into our spring semester.  This team just keeps getting better and stronger and I could not be more proud of them.  They are not only outstanding competitors, but they are all fantastic students as well.”

Savannah Smith, ’18 started the day with a win in the first class, Open Flat and she and Eliza van der Woude quickly followed that up in Open Fences with 3rd and 2nd placings respectively.  Also contributing important points to the win were Amanda Metell, ’17, of Boston, MA and Shelby Powers, ’20, of Fredericksburg, VA who both placed second in their rides.

The team heads to The University of Mary Washington this coming weekend for two days of competition; the last before IHSA Regionals on February 25.  The show begins at noon on Saturday and 10 am on Sunday at Hazelwild Farm in Fredericksburg.  Come out and support our team!
