ASHLAND, Va. - Randolph-Macon sophomore right-hander Matthew Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) has been voted to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District Baseball Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
District 5 includes Division III schools in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Nickles is the lone sophomore on the team and the only player from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). He is now a candidate for the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America Baseball Team.
A Biology major, Nickles has a cumulative grade point average of 4.10.
Nickles has made 10 appearances on the mound for the Yellow Jackets this season with five starts. He has a 4-0 record with an ERA of 2.83. In 35 innings, Nickles has allowed 27 hits with 12 walks and 31 strikeouts. Opponents are hitting .213 against Nickles.
Top-ranked Randolph-Macon is the No. 1 seed in the Holly Springs, N.C., Regional Tournament. The Yellow Jackets open regional play on Thursday, May 17 at 11 a.m. against No. 6 LaGrange. The double-elimination tourney is scheduled to conclude on Sunday, May 20.
