GREENSBORO, N.C. - Junior Cole Migliorini (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) belted a pair of two-run homers as the eighth-ranked Randolph-Macon baseball team won 11-4 at Guilford in ODAC action Sunday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets swept the two-game set to improve to 13-4 overall and 4-0 in the ODAC. R-MC had won five straight games and is tied with Washington & Lee for first in the conference.
R-MC started the scoring in the top of the first. Sophomore Jeff Butler (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) drew a one-out walk and Migliorini smacked a two-run homer to give the Yellow Jackets the early lead.
The Yellow Jackets doubled their advantage in the third. Freshman Ryan Duphorn (Erial, N.J./Paul VI) had a leadoff single, moved to second on a bunt single by Butler and advanced to third when junior Rick Spiers (South Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) reached on an error. Migliorini lined out to short and when the throw went to second in an attempt to double up Butler, Duphorn sped home with the third run. Senior Stuart Brown (Midlothian, Va./Trinity) brought Butler in with a base hit as R-MC took a 4-0 lead.
After the Quakers put up two in the fourth, the Yellow Jackets responded in the sixth. Duphorn drew a one-out walk and moved to third on a base hit by Butler. Spiers hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Duphorn, making it 5-2. Migliorini hit his second homer of the game and third of the series to score Butler ahead of him, giving R-MC a 7-2 advantage.
After GC plated one in the sixth, R-MC answered in the seventh. Junior Joseph Tuzzolo (Newport News, Va./Menchville) had a leadoff single, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by senior Jay Patti (Sparks, Md./Hereford) to push the lead to 8-3.
The Quakers added one in the seventh prior to the Yellow Jackets finished their scoring in the top of the ninth. Tuzzolo had a leadoff single and senior Blake Saathoff (Catonsville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) pinch-ran for him. Patti doubled, moving Saathoff to third. Sophomore Ian Pape (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) singled to bring home Saathoff. Duphorn had a base hit to drive in Patti and a Butler groundout plated Pape, making the final 11-4.
Butler went 3 for 5 with three runs and one RBI, while Patti was 3 for 5 with one run and one RBI.
Sophomore Colin Selby (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) was the starter and winner, going 5.0 innings with five hits, two runs, one earned run, two walks and five strikeouts to up his record to 3-0.
Randolph-Macon continues conference play on Wednesday, March 22 with a 3:30 p.m. ODAC contest at Virginia Wesleyan.
